Heroes Essay Contest 2009

Elizabeth Littell
Essay Winner: Grades 3-5, Farmersville Elementary School

Hello my name is Elizabeth Littell. I live in Posey County. I would like to pick my brave sister as my hero. My older sister Christina Martin is a soldier in the army. She was sent away for a while but is back now. She lives here in Evansville. While in Iraq she hosted some karaoke nights and played her guitar to pass the time away and keep everybody's moods up. She said that she got sand in her nose and ears a lot. I love it when she shows me her army voice. She yells "get down, get down, I said get down!" It sounds so strong and loud like the police on a bust. She says that people in Iraq may not understand English but they understand the tone of voice. I bet it freaks our forest neighbors out when she does it, but I really love it. I was very scared while she was away. I heard people talk about things happening over there so I prayed that God would keep her safe. Now she is safe but I worry about her going back to that bad place. I am so glad that she protects people and cares about them too. My sister also works on an ambulance. She really loves her job. I hear the stories that she tells of how she helped someone or how she saved someone's life today. But she sometimes sees things that hurt her and she cries when she thinks that she is alone. Some of the things she sees would make most people have nightmares. Just the other day she could not save a 13 year old boy while on the ambulance. He was already gone and his mother wasn't doing well about it. My sister is not allowed to talk about things that happen while working but her heart broke for that woman and the boy. My sister must be very strong to do her job. Perhaps it's the thought of her own child and family that keeps her strong. She also often talks to homeless or needy people to see if she can help them in some way. She donates food, money, time and resources to them. She once she collected blankets that she wanted to sew together to make mattresses for the homeless to sleep on. And her car has way too many stickers on it about helping people and about having a green earth. Christina goes to college to learn more medical stuff. She wants to be a doctor and a missionary someday because she loves helping people the most. She is the greatest sister too. She always keeps her promises, takes me shopping at the mall, and remembers my birthdays. When I wanted to go to my first concert she tried harder then anyone to get me tickets to see Taylor Swift and cried "with me" when she could not. I think that is great. So for all these reasons I hope you pick my sister Christina Martin, the brave, the caring, the soldier, the medic and the person herself, because she really is a hero.
